The best bitoques in Lisbon
You have to add these to your favorites.
A Portuguese dish, very simple where the secret lies on the way you cook the steak and the sauce A traditional Portuguese bitoque always has a good steak in the center, accompanied by a stack of fries, a portion of rice and a fried egg. The old school ones also come with pickles in 3 colors, a piece of white cauliflower, a green cornichon and a slice of carrot. Not healthy, just delicious. We invited our team member Monica Valente to share her favorite restaurants.
"If you ask me the top 3 in Lisbon, none of them in a fancy restaurant, all typical and very traditional places where the best secrets are kept. These are my favorites. "
We hope you enjoy!
Jorge D'Amália -
@jorgedamalia
Address: Calçada da Memória 20, 1300-396, Lisboa.
Jorge is behind the counter and Amália or Maria João are in the kitchen. Always friendly and ready to talk about all the current affairs. A homely space where the "bitoque" is king. Here the secret is to prepare everything directly on the metal plate where it's served. The fries are always homemade, never frozen, which makes the dish incredible. A cafe that is also a restaurant (in true Portuguese style), located in an emblematic neighborhood of Ajuda where the decoration reflects the owner’s favorite soccer club: Belenenses!
Das Flores
Address: Rua das Flores 76 78, 1200-195, Lisboa.
I discovered this restaurant a few years ago, and since the first time I became a fan of their bitoque. Every time I go there I tell myself I will resist the urge to get one and eat something else… but I always fail to follow through.
Tip: The establishment is tiny and you have to make a reservation!
Café Império
Address: Av. Alm. Reis 205 A, Lisboa
In all honesty it’s not actually a bitoque, it's a sirloin steak. But either way it couldn't be left out of the list!!! The secret is in the sauce; a secret recipe with a slight coffee flavor that makes for a truly irresistible dish. The space is large and grand, open since 1955 is one of Lisbon’s most iconic restaurants.
Now that you've gotten an inside look into some of our favorite bitoques come try them for yourself!

Words by Vasco Mónica
Our first contact with the sea often comes through the people closest to us and this is exactly what happened to Vasco Mónica, our third guest on Portugal by Locals. From a very young age he remembers going down to the beach and watching his father surf. As time went on he created his own relationship with the sea and started to enjoy surfing more and more. Nowadays he is exploring not only surfing, but all sports that are related to the sea. However, deep down what he really enjoys is spending time on the beach with his loved ones as it truly is in this environment that he feels at home. Read more about his story.
What is your connection to the sea?
I started surfing at a very young age because my father was a surfer and always took me to the beach with him ever since I was 1 /2 years old. I remember staying on the sand and playing and after a while I started to naturally build my own relationship with the sea. At the beginning it was very much for my father, but I never felt any pressure. I started with a bodyboard, then I moved on to a surfboard and that's how my independence came about. I started to really enjoy it and became "addicted". Then I spent a few years competing and as of late I've been exploring not only surfing, but all sports and everything related to the sea; from spearfishing, diving, walking on rocks, making campfires on the beach, going camping. So deep down I really enjoy spending time at the beach with my friends and being in this environment honestly does me well.
At the moment I am taking a pilot training course, but I also love cooking, painting, drawing and creating as I feel inspired in the moment, or when I see something that peaks my interest. I like to explore this universe without big patterns or objectivity, it's just for pleasure and no doubt Andy's (Vasco's puppy) arrival in my life was a good source of inspiration. Since he arrived I have become much more creative with my art.
And of course, living in Lisbon also ends up being a source of inspiration to me due to the city being such a hot spot nowadays. There are so many things happening at the same time, from bars to music and everything in between, it ties together a great combination of my interests. As I was born in Alentejo and have my essence focused in nature and calmness, to be able to the add the sea and surfing to my being and to live out the best these two worlds have to offer is truly like finding the perfect balance.

Words by Francisca Sousa
Being in the sea is a form of therapy, meditation and an opportunity to be 100% present in the moment. In this edition of Portugal By Locals you will meet Francisca Sousa, a film director, who told us that her first contact with the sea was in her childhood and from then on her relationship with water has had many meanings. Chica is a close partner of +351 and directed the AW'22 video. You can watch it on our social networks.
What is your connection to the sea?
My relationship with the sea above all is one of immense respect, because the sea is not just the sea, but instead part of a whole ocean. For me it is an immensity, it brings a feeling of greatness, freedom and wildness. The sea is a natural element that is fickle and very unpredictable. Furthermore, my connection with the water is very strong because I grew up near the sea, in Costa da Caparica. Just having the water at my feet, the sound of the waves, the smell and the breeze brings comfort to me as it has always been present in my life, so when I am far from the sea I feel as if there is something missing, sometimes this feeling can be compensated by a lake or a river. Above all, my relationship with water and movement stems from my childhood. Whenever I was in a bad mood my mother would tell me to go surfing or to at least go see the sea and to get my feet and face wet, it was truly the strongest form of therapy to feel the sea around me. My sports connection to the sea is surfing, it is my sport of choice. I am not able to stop myself from surfing when there are great waves to be had, this adds another layer to my complex relationship with the sea on a personal, physical and spiritual level. Being in the sea is therapeutic, it is my safe place and where I can go to forget about everything else and just be in the moment.

Words by Pedro Batista
The connection and fascination with the sea can happen at various stages of our lives, and so was the case with the artist, Pedro Batista. Since he was a child, being in the water has always seemed magical to him and over time this relationship has deepened. In the new series, Portugal By Locals, you will meet people who are passionate about sports and who embody this lifestyle in their essence.
What is your connection to the sea?
My connection to the sea and fascination with water started when I was a kid. I was captivated by the beach during the summer and swimming 3x a week.
Being in the water always felt magical to me. However, it was the passion for skateboarding, at age 8 that connected me to a different culture other than surf culture, though both have always been very close to one another. It was with the vibe of the 90's serving as backdrop, that I created garage bands with friends, built skate ramps on the streets, and basically lived there as well. At the same time I felt an attraction to the sea and to surfing whenever I passed by Carcavelos beach during the winter. As I lived and studied in Carcavelos, this encounter with surfing happened a few years later, when I was 16, through a friend who skated and surfed. He lent me a wetsuit full of holes and an old board. Since then, I have never stopped.
Discovering surfing had a profound impact on my life. I became a happier, more pragmatic person, fully aware of what is essential in life, and what isn’t. Let’s say I discovered a spiritual side, as a realization that the present is more important than all the wishful scenarios we produce in our minds. It was an awakening through an activity that connected me to nature, to people (friends), and to living with more enthusiasm and happiness.
The humility we feel when we are exposed to the elements that accompany surfing is extraordinary. The smell of the sand until we reach the sea, the wind in our faces, the cold water on our feet, the silence of the first duck dive, the magical feeling of gliding on a wave, and the helplessness we feel when we are rolled by a wave... and many other experiences that surfing and the sea offers us in this constant exercise of adaptation. At the risk of sounding cliché, the truth is that we are alive very little time (as you may already know ;) and that we never know how much time we have left, so the path is always forward no matter how difficult or challenging it may seem. This is my relationship with the sea, which is ultimately my relationship with myself and others.
Happy surfing!

Meet the beloved beaches of our Founder and Creative Director Ana Penha e Costa.
Portugal by Locals is a series of publications where we talk to real locals to know more about their home country's favourite spots. In its first edition, we talked to our Founder and Creative Director Ana Penha e Costa and discovered her beach choices and best-kept secrets to surf and chill in Portugal.
We asked Ana what are her favourite beaches and if she could tell us why each one of them is so special to her. Read the full article to meet all these places through Ana's eyes.
Guincho and Crismina
"One of my favourite beaches in PT is undoubtedly Guincho Beach, where I started surfing and where my family has a home. The beach is beautiful, you can see the Sintra Mountain in the background, and because it is so exposed to the wind, it has many "Nortadas" that makes it better for windsurfing than for surfing. Off-shore days at Guincho are rare so those who are local enjoy them in a special way.
Nowadays I do little surfing at Guincho due to the crowd, so I always end up surfing at Crismina which is a bit further to the south.
Crismina
Costa Vicentina
I'm a fan of Costa Vicentina! Ponta Ruiva, Cordoama, Castelejo, Amado are my favourite beaches there. This coast is very special because it is really wild, has much fewer people than in the centre, has beautiful landscapes and cliffs, its smell of nature in the air, the stars at night where you can see the milky way, and also because it is rare not having good waves with so many options.
Praia do Amado
Ericeira
It's always good to go to Coxos once in a while because I easily find familiar faces in the water, people who have followed my evolution in the competition times, and it's so good to remember those times! Needless to say, it is the best right in Portugal.
I have enjoyed some sessions in Ribeira de Ilhas with my Twin fin, despite the thousands of surfers from all over the world who are in the water, it is always worth catching such perfect and long waves.
Coxos
Costa da Caparica
For Costa da Caparica I've always had love/hate because who is local in Guincho does not surf in Costa. But now that I live in Lisbon I love to go to São João, there I catch several sessions with triangular peaks, familiar faces in the water, and good vibes. Always very fun!
São João
Praia Grande
Praia Grande is where I spent many summers. When the wind rises in Guincho, it is the closest option that has the microclimate effect which does not make the "Nortadas" spoil surfing days on this beach. I've had sessions surfing against the pebble on the left side that we surfers call "the left of the dead", epic! The rock is unique, it looks like a natural sculpture and the waves have a lot of power. The crowd is very easy :) and I am always welcome."
Praia Grande
Now that you have discovered all these spots, hurry up to enjoy the last days of this Summer season!
