Hanging out with Jean, founder of Vivants

Hanging out with Jean, founder of Vivants

We spent time with Jean, founder of Vivants, to talk about his journey from hospitality to wine. After starting out as a restaurateur, his passion for taste, sharing, and natural wines led him to create Vivants — an independent wine shop dedicated to sincere Portuguese and French wines, where conviviality and connection matter as much as what’s in the glass.

Can you tell us your story so far?

I started out as a restaurateur. The relationship with the product, the right taste, and sharing have always been central to me. Wine then became an obvious choice, especially natural wines, which tell the story of a place, a climate, and a person. After years of tasting and learning, I wanted to create a project that truly reflected who I am. Vivants was born from this journey: an independent wine shop, discerning but accessible, dedicated to natural Portuguese and French wines, selected without compromise.

Next steps?

To continue developing Vivants while remaining true to its spirit. To take the idea of a place of conviviality further, where wine is a pretext for meeting, exchanging, and enjoying. To imagine a living space, simple, in motion, without unnecessary formality.

Best spot in Portugal?

I have a soft spot for places that are still a little rough around the edges, off the beaten track. Vineyards are one of them. Certain areas of the Alentejo, particularly those close to the ocean, or villages between Lisbon and the Atlantic. Simple, authentic places where time slows down—like vineyards, and like good wines.

What does style mean to you?

Style is when nothing feels forced. It's a form of obviousness. In wine, as elsewhere, style emerges when you are aligned with what you are doing, without trying to seduce at all costs.

What motivated you to get started with your business?

The desire for freedom. Being able to choose my wines, tell their story, and connect with people. And also the need to offer sincere, lively wines, far removed from standardized products.

What's the Band, Music Style or Music Artist that inspires you?

More atmospheres than genres. Indie rock, a little jazz, sometimes minimalist electro. Music that leaves space, like the wines I love.

Any guilty pleasures worth mentioning?

A greasy kebab after a late shift, old hits from the 2000s, and sometimes opening a very nice bottle just because it's Tuesday.
