For the past 10 years, Julie has made Portugal her home and creative hub. She founded Lisbon by Design, an ambitious design fair showcasing Portugal's craftsmanship to the world. Now in its fourth consecutive year, the event continues to redefine the meaning of "Made in Portugal."
My journey began in Brussels where, after a first professional experience in finance, I started to work on residential real estate and interior design projects for me and some clients. Fifteen years ago, during holidays, my husband and I fell in love with Portugal. This prompted us to make the decision to relocate to Lisbon in 2013, where we started buying and renovating houses with character. Along this journey, I discovered Portugal's vibrant craft and design scene. Recognizing the talent of local artisans, I became passionate about promoting their work and giving them the recognition they deserve.
What motivated you to get started with Lisbon by Design?
When I arrived for my real estate projects, I encountered challenges in locating the diverse pool of creatives within the community. Over time, this quest evolved into a desire to showcase these talents to a wider audience. This aspiration led me to conceive the idea of creating a platform, a show, through which I could present my carefully curated selection of Portuguese designs. To ensure a captivating presentation, I encouraged these designers to craft unique and innovative pieces tailored for a large-scale exhibition.
Lisbon by Design is an intimate fair, showcasing the best of Portuguese craft and design, with a fresh selection annually. As we approach our 4th edition starting May 23rd, I'm thrilled by the success we've achieved since the beginning. Each year, we attract a diverse interesting audience and so many talented participants. It's gratifying to see this initiative inspiring others and fostering collaborations. Many artists we've featured are now working with recognized brands. I'm proud of the impact we've made and excited for what's to come. Lisbon by Design serves also as a platform committed to elevating Portuguese creativity. Through its initiatives, including the launch of Lisbon Design Week, Lisbon by Design aims to develop projects that uplift and promote the richness of Portuguese craft and design, contributing to the cultural vitality of the city.
What does style mean to you?
To me, style in interior design is about creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also reflective of one's personality and preferences. It's about curating a harmonious blend of elements that resonate with the individual's tastes and lifestyle. Unlike fashion trends, personal style in interior design endures, serving as a timeless expression of identity and comfort within one's living environment.
Where do you find inspiration?
Traveling and exploring projects in different cities are significant sources of inspiration for me. Witnessing diverse cultural influences, and innovative concepts in various countries enrich my perspective and stimulates creativity. It's through these experiences that I gain valuable insights, which I can then integrate into my own projects.
Next steps for you?
Next, Lisbon by Design will organize artist studio visits, delving deeper into the local creative community. Personally, I aspire to curate for brands, shops, hotels and museums, fostering more collaborative projects and showcasing Portuguese design excellence in Portugal and abroad.
